Do you have a long list of things you’ll do just as soon as life gets a bit less busy? Or is there one big dream you can’t seem to make time for?
Last night I spoke to a friend who’s planning a novel and needs time and space to actually write it. We talked about writing retreats and how they sound like a great idea! Imagine getting away and having nothing to do except write.
Anyway, this week I’m on a kind of retreat, although not of the tranquil, isolated variety where you live like a hermit in a log cabin until your manuscript’s complete. Nor is it what immediately springs to mind when I hear the word ‘retreat’, which is a Monty Python-esque group of knights running away from danger (or real world responsibilities) while shouting ‘retreat!’ to one another in panic. Instead, I’ve taken some time away from work to catch up with old friends.
I have a few books to get through while we’re here, because reading is another of those things I always wish I had more time for.
And when I’ve caught up on all of that, it’s back to my current writing project. I’m on the second draft, so don’t have any words to share with you from it, but here are some photos from a location-scouting trip I took.
I think I need a writing retreat, though I don’t think I’d get the leave of absence for a month from my family lol!

Being a responsible adult does rather slow down the creativity, sadly, doesn’t it? Maybe they could spare you for a day here and there? I love the sound of your #RiNoWriMo though!

Possibly… but I am sure I can arrange an hour a day at least in the summer holidays!!!! (I Hope! #RiNoWriMo!)

Hi Lucy, it really is. It’s amazing what just getting away can do for your state of mind – I feel better already!

I’d love more than anything a writing retreat. I swear I’d get so much more done. I’d also like more time to read too.

Reading’s such good food for writing, isn’t it?

I’ve been thinking about going on a writing retreat a lot this week!!! Even if it’s only a day and night, I need to get my book edited and real life keeps getting in the way!

Ooh, you’re at the editing stage, congrats! Hope you manage to find some time to focus on it 🙂

Thanks Claire! My afternoon is free, so I’m planning to spend some time on it this afternoon and am dedicating as much time as I can on it, until it’s on better shape! I think giving myself a time goal is helping 🙂

I think I’ve been on a “retreat” for far too long. I think it’s time to get back to work, although… another week of quiet relaxation and contemplation might be just the ticket to get the creative juices flowing again.

Can you going away to adult camp for even 4 days? Meals prepared, different activities offered or time alone to complete projects? That would be a dream. Good luck with your second draft!!

You’ll like “The Invention of Wings.” I read it a few years ago and enjoyed it. 🙂

Retreats are amazing but I had to wait until my kids were older before I escaped for a few days!

Yes, Ruth, I know there are lots of things in life that can make this tricky, and having kids is certainly one of them!

Thanks Diana, I can tell you it was a northern stretch of English coast – and a beautiful day of moody skies and sea!

A retreat or run away to spend time on my own sounds fantastic. Could really do with one right now

It was such a luxury to get away, I wish we could make them compulsory for everyone!
